Hi, My name is Hillary and I am a 2nd year pre-pharmacy student taking a class about Novel Experience and Expression at the University of Florida. The project we were assigned to was to express a particular experience. For my project, I chose to convey the experience of an expecting/new mother who gives birth to a defected baby.
Thalidomide was a drug used in the late 1950s and 1960s to treat minor illnesses, most commonly the symptoms of morning sickness. However the effects were most evident in the babies born to mothers who had taken the drug during pregnancy. Many of these babies had physical deformities. What would it have been like to be a mother in this time period and culture to have a baby with a birth defect?
